Dictionary activities

 

Bilingual Dictionary

Preparing dictionaries involving two dictionaries of which there are two types:

1. A developing  language paired with developed language (Guarani-Spanish, Cherokee-English, Ewondo-French, Quimbundo-Portuguese)
2. Developed language paired with developed language but which are rarely done (Thai-Spanish, Swedish-Lao, etc.)

 

Etymological Dictionary

Preparing dictionaries with the general aim of looking into where the words actually come from, e.g. A Basque etymological dictionary would have a long list of late Latin words, Romance words, Spanish, French, and even English words as well as references to extinct languages such as Aquitanian. A Mapun (language spoken around the area of Jos, Nigeria) etymological dictionary would show a heavy influence of Hausa, Arabic, and English. A Thai etymological dictionary would be replete with Sanskrit, Pali, Khmer, Chinese, and English words.

 

General Purpose Dictionary

Principally for developing languages in which basic words in such a language would be provided with definitions.

 

Terminological Dictionary

A dictionary aimed at coming and codifying new terms for any given language. U

 

Glossary

A basic word list, preliminary to undertaking a bilingual dictionary or developing extensive technical terminology

 

Learners' Dictionary

A dictionary aimed at non-native learners of a given language

 

Monolingual dictionary

The final step in developing a language's corpus. Usually undertaken after an extensive bilingual dictionary has been complete and after written documents of a given language, if any, are scrutinized.

 

Phonetic Dictionary

A dictionary of how words in a given language are pronounced. It may be prescriptive  (standardizing) or descriptive.

 

Pictorial Dictionary

A dictionary based on pictures of items. The Duden dictionaries are the most famous of such dictionaries

 

On-line and Digital Dictionary

Dictionaries which are used on the web or by installing a CD. These differ from traditional book-based dictionaries in that sound files, picture and video files, hyperlinks, etc. may be incorporated

 

Thesaurus

Dictionaries which are based on various synonyms and antonyms.
