Introduction

The International Centre for Lexicography and Language Planning was established with two distinct yet complementary overall goals:

1. To co-ordinate the development of underprivileged languages which, for whatever reason, have not been able to develop in the same way as other more privileged languages, Quechua, Cherokee, etc.

2. To co-ordinate and promote knowledge and teaching of important yet undertaught languages around the world, e.g. Chinese, Arabic, Thai, etc. That also entails promoting the teaching of widespread languages in hitherto new territories, e.g. Spanish in Thailand, Portuguese in Russia, etc.

The Centre aims to promote inter-disciplinary research, contribute to mutual enrichment of languages, spread knowledge about all languages to every people across the globe, and thus make a contribution towards global appreciation of our language heritages.
